Balfour Beatty Chief Executive Ian Tyler expresses his excitement about Centex Construction.
|
On February 1, 2007, London-based Balfour Beatty plc entered into an agreement with Dallas-based Centex Corporation to acquire its national commercial construction services business, Centex Construction. The deal is expected to close on or around March 31, 2007. Upon close, Centex Construction will adopt the Balfour Beatty name and operate in the U.S. as Balfour Beatty Construction. The company will continue to operate in the same way it does today, serving its existing clients across the U.S. with existing employee, leadership, and jobsite teams.
Balfour Beatty’s unsolicited offer for Centex Construction came as the result of the company’s strong performance. With the highest backlog in its history, coupled with strong revenue and earnings growth, Centex Construction has positioned itself as an industry leader in terms of performance, client service, and a talent differentiated within the marketplace.

Marriott's new property
After nine months of providing preconstruction services, Centex Construction was selected to be the general contractor on the new 15-story Residence Inn Hotel by Marriott in Alexandria, Virginia. The $33.5 million project will total 127,000 square feet and include a 39,000 square foot parking garage to accommodate 90 to 100 vehicles. Conveniently located near elevated Metro tracks, substantial completion on the new hotel is expected for the summer of 2008.
Living it up
Trammel Crow Residential selected Centex Construction to build their two new residential projects in the exclusive Turtle Creek area of Dallas, Texas. The first project is a $75 million, 21-story condominium tower. The second is a $35 million, 8-story, 171-unit apartment residence. Both projects are expected to be completed and available for new residents by November 2009.
Station Place, Building 3 - Part of Capitol Hill Revitalization
Centex Construction was selected to be the general contractor for the 741,000-square-foot Station Place, Building 3. This $97 million project is located at 700 2nd Street, N.W., adjacent to Union Station. Station Place, a 1.6 million-square-foot commercial real estate development on over five acres, is the largest private office development in the District of Columbia. Its proximity to Union Station creates construction challenges because of active rail lines near the site and an existing access-way ramp that services Union Station and the SEC headquarters buildings. Centex Construction and the Louis Dreyfus Property Group are also currently working together on a 392,000-square foot office building project at 1101 New York Avenue, Washington, D.C.
Proud Partners
Sitework was a huge factor in meeting the client's completion date on the new $94 million Tabor Correctional Institution in Tabor City, North Carolina. Local contractors, Benson Construction and Frank Horne Construction were added to the Centex Construction project team to fill the swamp atop which this prison would be built. These two contractors performed to stellar results, volunteering to work outside their scope and promoting a sense of openness and partnership in all that they did. Benson and Horne proved true the old adage that we're only as good as the people we work with.
Feeling Lucky
The Chickasaw Nation set out to build a casino of the highest quality that would draw local visitors as well as guests from surrounding states. Centex Construction was selected to build this new casino, that is now the largest in all of Oklahoma, and one that has generated quite a buzz among the gaming industry and public alike. The new $45.6 million Riverwind Casino, built in under 11 months, recently held a grand opening to a lucky crowd of 16,000.
